Julia Logan’s debut album in 2022, Forever Everly, featured significant collaborations, including a duet with Nina Persson from The Cardigans and guitar work from Peter Morén of Peter Bjorn And John. This well-received album not only made Logan a prominent figure in her home country of Sweden but also earned her a nomination for singer-songwriter of the year at the 2023 Manifestgalan Awards. She is now set to unveil her sophomore album, titled Faraway Nearby, which draws inspiration from Georgia O’Keeffe. Based on my early impressions, it’s likely to elevate her artistic presence even further.
Logan infuses a fresh energy into the indie folk-pop scene. Her voice has a warm, conversational quality, seamlessly reaching impressive heights when required, yet often remaining in a melancholic tone that resonates between Carole King and Sharon Van Etten. The album opens with “Top Of The World,” a lively piano-driven track reminiscent of the Weather Station mixed with Fleetwood Mac vibes, while “Mirrors” offers a brighter, more uplifting feel akin to boygenius’ hit “Not Strong Enough.” Despite the familiar influences, Logan’s unique signature shines through each track.
Today, she has released a music video for her latest single “Moodswings,” which replaces the piano backdrop of earlier singles with a sparkling fingerpicked guitar melody. Produced again by Bengtson, this track is a delightful mix of mood and texture. When the chorus emerges, Logan’s voice soars, delivering poignant lyrics: “Cause the heart’s a lonely hunter/ In an empty space/ When the moodswings color the ground/ And the summit wind blows/ I’ll wait for you/ Like a jewel in the sky, I’ll be gone.” A captivating keyboard riff joins in after the second chorus, adding an unexpected twist.
You can enjoy the music video for “Moodswings” directed by Henrik Johansson below, along with tracks “Mirrors” and “Top Of The World.”
Mark your calendars: Faraway Nearby will be released on November 1 under Mayborn/Dumont Dumont.
