Joker: Folie à Deux, directed by Todd Phillips, has premiered today as a musical follow-up to his 2019 film, Joker. Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as Arthur Fleck, now joined by Lady Gaga as his character’s love interest, Harleen “Lee” Quinzel, also known as Harley Quinn. Last week, Gaga released Harlequin, an album featuring show-tunes inspired by her character. Although I’ve typically found such music unappealing, I’ve surprisingly enjoyed it lately as I’ve been listening to it non-stop. It’s important to note that this album is separate from the film’s official soundtrack, which also releases today.
The soundtrack for Folie à Deux shares several tracks with Harlequin, showcasing older songs in a more somber style. Some tracks are performed by Phoenix, including a rendition of “The Joker.” The duo collaborates on songs like “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” “Bewitched,” and the Carpenters classic “(They Long To Be) Close To You.” Additionally, Nick Cave provides a unique interpretation in a medley of “Slap That Bass,” “Get Happy,” and “What the World Needs Now Is Love.” The soundtrack concludes with Phoenix’s cover of Daniel Johnston’s “True Love Will Find You In The End.”
