This year, Manchester artist Jasmine Cruickshank, known as jasmine.4.t, made history by becoming the first British musician to join Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory label. Bridgers, along with her bandmates Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus from boygenius, collaborated on jasmine.4.t’s single “Skin On Skin,” released earlier this year. This song is a glimpse into her upcoming debut album, You Are The Morning, scheduled for release early next year, entirely produced by boygenius.
To create You Are The Morning, jasmine.4.t and her all-trans band traveled to Los Angeles. The boygenius trio produced the album at the renowned Sound City Studios over the span of 12 days, lending their voices for backup on some tracks, alongside the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles. In conjunction with the album announcement, jasmine.4.t unveiled her latest single, “Elephant,” a touching piece that gradually builds intensity, featuring contributions from the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles and guitar by Julien Baker. In her press release, jasmine.4.t shared her inspiration:
“Elephant” was written during a pivotal moment in my transition, centered around my first love. It explores the complexities of friendship intertwined with deeper feelings. My life turned upside down in Bristol, and I found myself crashing on friends’ couches in Manchester, feeling lost and unready for a relationship. Recording this song in LA with Phoebe, Lucy, and Julien, along with my friends Eden and Phoenix, plus contributions from local trans musicians like Vixen, Bobby, Addy, and the wonderful Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, was truly healing.
