This year, Michelle Zauner, the creative force behind Japanese Breakfast, relocated to South Korea to study the language and advance her writing on her second book, which follows her acclaimed memoir Crying In H Mart. In addition to singing and giving interviews in Korean, she is also preparing to release a new album next year. In the midst of all this, she collaborated with Jack Antonoff to create a song for the Disney+ Marvel series Agatha All Along.
Agatha All Along continues the saga of the mischievous witch Agatha Harkness, portrayed by Kathryn Hahn in WandaVision. The show features a recurring song titled “The Ballad Of The Witches’ Road,” which must be sung by Harkness and her group to enter a mystical area known as the witches’ road. According to viewers, this musical segment was a highlight of the initial episode. (I’ve only watched the first episode, so that’s the extent of my insight.)
The song “The Ballad Of The Witches’ Road” was crafted by the talented songwriting duo Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, renowned for their contributions to the Frozen soundtrack. (Robert Lopez has made history as the youngest person to achieve an EGOT, and he’s now the only individual to secure a double EGOT, winning all major awards twice.) Together with Jack Antonoff, the duo produced a “pop version” of the witches’ song for Japanese Breakfast, showcasing a grand, orchestral vibe reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac. It’s worth a listen!
