Ivy Share Unreleased ’90s Song and Work on Album with Late Adam Schlesinger

Ivy Share Previously Unreleased ’90s Song, Finishing Album They Wrote With The Late Adam Schlesinger

During their active years from 1994 to 2002, Ivy, a renowned power-pop band, collaborated with the late Adam Schlesinger of Fountains Of Wayne. The band’s album Long Distance from 2000 will be reissued soon, unveiling unheard tracks from that era. The upcoming 25th-anniversary vinyl reissue will include three bonus tracks, one of which is the newly released “All I Ever Wanted,” available today. The digital version will also add a demo of the hit song “Edge Of The Ocean” alongside a remix. Let’s delve into this fresh release.

The song “All I Ever Wanted” dates back to 1997, during the production of Apartment Life. The track is exceptional and surprisingly remained unreleased until now. Those with an affinity for guitar-based indie-pop music should definitely give it a listen. Andy Chase, a surviving member of Ivy, recounts how he and his bandmate Dominique Durand stumbled upon this hidden gem:

In our search through the Ivy archives for unreleased Apartment Life-era tracks, Dominique and I stumbled upon a 2” 24 track reel-to-reel tape labeled “Stupid Cat.” As we played it, a familiar tune resounded. It felt so nostalgic that we resorted to Shazam to identify it and locate its place in our discography. To our surprise, the song remained undocumented. Looking back to 1997, renowned artist Lloyd Cole co-produced a few songs for Apartment Life. While we released one titled “I’ve Got A Feeling,” we inexplicably shelved this one, never even giving it a rough mix. Hence, the master tape languished in storage for 24 years, forgotten. Following its rediscovery, we digitized it and I finalized a proper mix in my studio in 2024. Notably, Lloyd contributed guitar work to this track!

The notion of using Shazam to unveil your own composition is intriguing, showcasing the quirks of human memory. Furthermore, it appears that “All I Ever Wanted” is just a glimpse of what’s to come. Thoroughly exploring their archives, Chase and Durand unearthed over 21 unfinished tracks they had crafted with Schlesinger. They are currently in the process of completing these songs for Ivy’s first album in over a decade.

Excitingly, the prospect of new Ivy music combined with the charm of “All I Ever Wanted” is a delightful revelation. Listen to the song below.
