Earlier this year, notable producer Four Tet unveiled his outstanding album Three, which has become one of the highlights of the year. Following this release, he collaborated with friends Fred again.. and Caribou on new tracks. Now, Four Tet is back with a fresh single featuring UK pop sensation Ellie Goulding.
The connection between Four Tet and Ellie Goulding dates back several years. He remixed her hit “Burn” in 2014, and she contributed to his 2020 song “Baby.” Recently, Goulding has worked with Calvin Harris, yet her voice complements more experimental dance music beautifully. In the new collaborative track “In My Dreams,” Goulding delivers gentle vocals over Four Tet’s intricate arrangement of bells and chimes, resulting in a captivating sound. Here’s what Kieran Hebden shared regarding their recent partnership:
Last year, Ellie sent me some voice notes with ideas for a song, including lyrics and melodies she recorded on her phone. She asked if I could create something from those. She has previously mentioned her enjoyment of sending me vocals to transform into a piece (which is how our track “Baby” came to be). I gathered additional sounds to accompany it and crafted “In My Dreams.” While she added new vocal segments, we kept the original voice note recordings for the lead vocals. Often, the initial take holds a certain magic. My aim was to create a piece that contrasts harsh, powerful sounds with something gentle and personal.
