Open Head, an experimental band from the Hudson Valley, has officially signed with Wharf Cat and debuted their single “Catacomb” last month. They are now promoting their forthcoming album What Is Success with an intense new track titled “House.” This song is characterized by its dark and industrial influences, enhancing its rapid tempo.
The band elaborates: “House” originated during a crucial jam session while composing the album. Although they had numerous songs ready, many were confined within a complex post-punk style they wanted to move away from. They found value in creating atmospheric sounds over detailed melodies, drawing inspiration from the direct nature of electronic music and the experimental edge of rap. As a result, Jon switched from bass guitar to an Arturia Brute SE to concentrate on tonal manipulation instead of a conventional bass line, while Jared utilized his SPD-SX to trigger samples of scrap metal, processed through guitar effects. These elements became the primary melody. Brandon contributed haunting textures by bowing a guitar modified with screwdriver bits, producing the ethereal pads that envelop the track. The lyrics depict a nightmarish blend of flesh and metal, conveying a sense of torment: “I don’t wanna know what habit forms chains/ I just wanna be done for awhile.”
