Guided By Voices – Revisiting “I Am A Scientist”

Guided By Voices – “I Am A Scientist” (30th Anniversary Version)

Guided By Voices continues to produce new music rapidly, but after four decades in the industry, they are occasionally reflecting on their journey. This year marks the 30th anniversary of GBV’s breakthrough album, Bee Thousand. To commemorate this milestone, they are releasing a new 7″ featuring updated versions of two beloved tracks from the album, “I Am A Scientist” and “Tractor Rape Chain.”

The lead track, “I Am A Scientist,” was released today. Bob Pollard expressed to Rolling Stone that this song and album were pivotal in his musical journey, allowing him to pursue his passion for rock music. Pollard mentioned, “I’m still studying and analyzing myself and the world from the perspective of a songwriter.”

Regarding the new recordings, Pollard mentioned, “They’re pretty true to the live renditions. I wrote ‘Scientist’ right around the time when we were recording songs for what was then a double album called Instructions To The Rusty Time Machine. ‘Tractor Rape Chain’ was a reworking of an older song we used to play live in the early Eighties.”

You can listen to “I Am A Scientist (Uncle Bob’s Version)” below.

The 30th-anniversary edition of “I Am A Scientist” and “Tractor Rape Chain” will be available on 8/28. Pre-order here.
