Geordie Greep, the frontman of UK band Black Midi, recently performed his first gig with his new project Geordie Greep And The Swing Boys. He will also be having his debut solo shows in the US next month. In an Instagram post last week, Greep stated that Black Midi was a thing of the past. Now, it has been revealed that Greep’s first solo album is on its way.
Titled The New Sound, Greep recorded the solo LP in London and São Paulo. He mentioned that this album is significant as it’s the first time he had complete creative freedom without any constraints.
He expressed that working alone allowed him to follow his creative impulses without limitations. While being part of a band like Black Midi gives a sense of being able to do everything, it also comes with some restrictions. Greep decided to re-record some tracks in Brazil with local musicians and completed the tracking in just one or two days.
Greep also shared his thoughts on the album’s length, mentioning his desire to avoid making it excessive. He emphasized his love for music where listeners interpret the meaning themselves, citing artists like Peter Hammill and Nat King Cole as inspirations for his lyrical style.
The lead single from The New Sound is “Holy, Holy,” a dynamic six-minute track blending plastic sounds with funk-rock elements. The song features Greep on vocals, synth, electric and acoustic guitar, and fretless bass. The album is set to be released in the fall, accompanied by an extensive tour in both the US and Europe.
