Stream Nina Ryser’s Fantastic, Adventurous New Album Water Giants

Nina Ryser, known for her work with Palberta and other projects, has released a captivating new solo album today titled Water Giants. This record showcases her ability to explore various musical styles, ranging from vibrant electronic pieces to energetic indie-pop tracks, all unified by a distinctive artistic vision. The tracklist includes standout songs like the dynamic electro-pop number “Cuz You,” the melodic strings-and-piano piece “You Are What You Eat,” and the whimsical synth track “Piggy Boys,” culminating in the expressive “Beauty In Grime” and tranquil ambient sounds.

The album is filled with exciting surprises. Ryser describes this project as her first solo work crafted in a studio setting rather than her home during a collaboration with sound engineer Lucas Knapp. While still feeling personal and handcrafted, the record blends Ryser’s DIY roots with a polished sound, providing an intriguing experience. It’s reminiscent at times of the playful style found in the Microphones or a more lo-fi interpretation of Magnetic Fields, and my colleague Tom Breihan noted some similarities to the Blow.

Longtime fans of Ryser’s diverse body of work, including the previously released singles “Things I Claim” and “Underestimate,” will undoubtedly appreciate this new album. You can listen to it below.

Water Giants is now available from Dear Life.
