Denison Witmer, an established singer-songwriter, has collaborated with Sufjan Stevens since 2005, and they have recently released a new song together. Sufjan Stevens produced Witmer’s latest track, “Older And Free,” which embodies a rich indie-folk sound. The combination of Witmer’s unique voice with Stevens’ ethereal harmonies, along with an arrangement featuring acoustic guitars, strings, and woodwinds, reflects Stevens’ distinctive musical style. Here’s Denison Witmer’s perspective on the song:
As we age and learn more about ourselves, we gain the ability to seek out activities that help restore our balance during challenging times. Personally, I find that solitary time and connecting with nature are crucial. Engaging in physical activities and allowing my thoughts to wander has become essential for my well-being—whether it’s running or, in this instance, hiking. I composed this song while camping solo at French Creek State Park, not too far from my Pennsylvania home. During the Covid lockdown, my wife and I discovered that we needed personal time to avoid burnout from daily responsibilities. The melody and lyrics came to me as I hiked the Lenape Trail back to my campsite. I always carry a small classical guitar with me, and I completed the song that evening. I became so fond of the sound that we ended up using this guitar to record the basic tracks.
