deary – “The Drift”: A Musical Journey on TunesDeck

deary – “The Drift”

deary, a shoegaze duo from the UK, consists of Ben Easton and Rebecca ‘Dottie’ Cockram. They’ve just unveiled their second EP titled Aurelia, which follows their debut self-titled EP from last year. Their latest single, “The Drift,” has just been released.

The EP Aurelia was both produced and created by Easton and Dottie, with mastering done by Simon Scott, who is the drummer for Slowdive and contributes to three of the tracks. Earlier this year, they released two singles, “Selene” and “The Moth”, and in January, Dottie collaborated on Whitelands’ track “Tell Me About It.”

Dottie shared a personal touch about the EP’s creation, stating:

After finding a letter to my younger self, written when I was 22, I reflected on how I felt after leaving university and returning home to my parents during the overwhelming times of Covid. I was struggling with inspiration and direction and had reached out to my future self for encouragement. This letter made me realize how much can change in just a few years and how the unexpected lies ahead.

Now at 26, I looked back at that younger version of me for solace, reaffirming that life progresses and evolves. This sense of duality became vital in the new music I created.

Easton mentioned his own transformation, noting an increase in social anxiety and a disconnect from previous joys, along with repetitive patterns in his life. He shared that starting the year sober allowed him to channel this journey into a mindful creative process. Each song incorporates similar motifs, particularly the riffs in “The Moth” and “The Drift,” symbolizing these recurring themes.
