The legendary trio Crosby, Stills, Nash, and (occasionally) Young, known for their tumultuous dynamics, showcased a moment of harmony just before David Crosby’s passing in 2023. Following Neil Young’s decision to withdraw his music from Spotify in 2022, the rest of the band stood by him. Now, listeners will have the chance to experience a recently discovered live recording from their formative years, before any conflicts arose.
The group had its notable second performance at Woodstock in August 1969, followed by their 1970 album Déjà Vu. Recently, an old multi-track recording of their performance at New York City’s Fillmore East in September 1969—just their fourth show—has been uncovered, leading to the release of the album Live At The Fillmore East next month.
Neil Young and Stephen Stills, who are set to perform together at a “Harvest Moon” benefit in Los Angeles next month, worked on mixing Live At The Fillmore East alongside John Hanlon at Sunset Sound Studios. In an official statement, Young expressed, “[We] have the tapes, and they sound so real. We mixed at Sunset Sound — using the analog echo chamber, avoiding digital echo. The entire production remains analog…Pure. Analog. No digital – an Analog Original.” This album features both acoustic and electric performances, showcasing tracks that would later appear on the group’s albums alongside songs from individual member projects. A tracklist is provided below, including a lively rendition of “Helplessly Hoping” from the 1969 album Crosby, Stills & Nash.
