Coldwave refers to a style of music characterized by its frigid blend of post-electroclash goth elements, featuring mechanical beats and haunting synths. However, the Australian band Coldwave has a different musical identity. Originating from Adelaide four years ago, this six-member group presents a rich and theatrical version of indie rock. They’ve gained notable attention from Triple J, one of Australia’s prominent radio stations, and they have recently released an exciting two-track single.
At the forefront is Harrison Evans, the lead vocalist with a sharp, speak-sing style reminiscent of contemporary UK post-punk artists. Coldwave’s sound is expansive, layering guitars and brass in a dramatic fashion that channels the grandeur of early 2000s groups like Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene. This intriguing blend is evident in their new tracks, “The Ants” and “Italia ’06,” produced alongside Bonnie Knight, known for her work with Amyl And The Sniffers.
“The Ants” b/w “Italia ’06” follows their previous releases, including the recent 2023 EP titled No Conflict. Regarding “The Ants,” Evans shared that the song came from a comforting place, reflecting on childhood and embarking on a journey of self-discovery amidst the acknowledgment of shared experiences. Below are the music videos for both tracks, directed by Conor Mercury.
The single “The Ants” b/w “Italia ’06” is now available through P.A.K. Records.
