In just a few weeks, the renowned noise-rock band Chat Pile from Oklahoma City will be releasing their eagerly awaited new album titled Cool World, following their critically acclaimed 2022 debut, God’s Country. While they have several releases to their name, this marks only their second full-length album, apart from the Tenkiller film soundtrack and a few EPs. So far, the group has unveiled two powerful tracks, “I Am Dog Now” and “Masc,” and now, they are introducing a third single.
The new track, “Funny Man,” shares the intense energy of its predecessors, featuring distorted riffs mixed with a chaotic, funky edge reminiscent of ’90s metal. Raygun Busch’s lyrics dive into a frenzied rapture: “The wicked jester is dancing and clapping as my big strong hands kill the people they told me! There are times that I can almost believe it! I can almost imagine I was meant to do this and be here!” It’s yet another compelling addition to their repertoire.
In a recent statement, Busch explained that “Funny Man” tackles themes around servitude and the tension between illusion and reality, particularly regarding America and warfare. The title draws inspiration from a little-known British film, although the song itself bears no further connection to it.
The music video for “Funny Man,” directed by Matt Rosenbaum, presents a surreal series of still images from a suburban setting, where everything feels off-kilter. Stin, the bassist for Chat Pile, expressed his excitement about the track and its accompanying visual:
“My favorite thing about ‘Funny Man’ is that we’ve finally accomplished creating our version of the ultimate Beavis And Butt-Head couch music. This is like our ‘Thunderkiss ’65’ or ‘Existence Is Punishment’. The video’s static visuals contrast fascinatingly with the song’s energy, creating an eerie feeling that captures those disorienting dream-like moments we all experience but often find hard to express.”

Taking band promo photos is one of the greatest indignities one must suffer. 4 grown men standing around a train track or some shit trying to look cool while people drive by wondering why a group of gas station employees would need senior portraits
