I found Old Crow through XM radio, and the first album I bought was their self titled album "old crow medicine show". Then I went back and started listening to their other songs. At firt I only like methamphetamine off this album, but then alabama high test grew on me. And then crazy eyes became my favorite, then caroline... Then I realized i love them ALL! And I have not heard a bad song or album from this group. OCMS is just good music, period.

The album was recommended to me, but I don't like it and wish I hadn't spent $9.99 on it.

I was shocked at the amount of reviews for this album slamming OCMS for not sounding like their previous albums. To me this album feels like a natural progression for the band. Their previous album, Big Iron World, incorporated drums and a wider variety of song styles. For Tennessee Pusher the drums are more prominent and there touches of organ for color on some songs, but to me it feels like the same band. To me this proves that they are true musicians, not content to remain in one place, but explore new sounds. Great musicians never repeat themselves, and Old Crow hasn't done that here. And to the people that compared this to modern mainstream country, I have to ask: Have you actually heard any modern country? This music is a far cry from the slick, cliche, flag waving and fake music broadcasting from modern country stations. I love how all but one song on the album is an original compositions. I hope in the future some of these songs become as revered standards as "Nine Pound Hammer" and "Doin' My Time". To everyone who hated this album on first listen, drop all of your preconcieved notions of Old Crow and just enjoy the music that comes out of your speakers. If you truly love this band as much as you say you do, you'll let these guys grow and continue to make new and exciting music. If you want the old Old Crow, well thats why music is recorded, so you can revisit it.

Here's a group of young pickers who've paid their dues. The succession of albums they've cut shows a steady progression from buskers-with-gusto into full-blown songwriters with a tale to tell and the chops to make it tasty. Some say the instrumentalists need more time in the woodshed; and I'm not complaining. But I say the musical storytelling is all this band needs to excel.
  • Tennessee Pusher for sure

I almost didn't click buy after reading the reviews of this album that said the music is cool and distant and different from what they do so well. I'm so glad I clicked! This is a great album. Is it mostly down and out music? Yes, it reflects what is happening in our country now. I don't need music that totally changes my outlook, I just need honest songs and excellent musicians who play with passion. This album more than delivers. These guys are great, hands down and this might be the best yet. If you like Old Crow, you'll like this. People change, your tastes change, musicians change and somehow you might change with them. I'm hoping these guys make it out to Oregon one of these days...

Another one delivered. I love these guys and their story... so I'm a bit partial to them. Safe to say they did not lose any edges that initially drew us to them. -Jason

I was very skeptical based on early reviews of this album. However, then i got it. Methamphetamine is not only a masterpiece, but it is vivid and simply important. Greatest Hustler is a sprawling, funny work of folk/ Humdinger (seemingly sung by Old Crow's banj-tar player) is another rowdy classic. This album has been misreviewed. It is as simple as that. Old Crow has created an unassuming intelligent profile of the United States. With Caroline wrapping the whole slightly dark album up, the listener is overwhelmed with a truly optimistic feeling. Great Work. and those who were not satisfied, give it another listen-- even though Union Maid may remain the apple of your eye, these songs will truly impact anyone as well.

First I should say that I don't own this album, but I've heard a lot of its tracks (I might actually be inclined to give it a higher or lower rating but didn't think I could do anything other than 3 stars and be close to honest). Anyway, I can hear the shift in production on this album, which I believe is a change for the worse. I love David Rawlings as an artist and I think his musical sensibilities and the "ghostly harmonies" he's known for came through in the occasional roughness of the previous OCMS releases. But seeing them perform these new songs live proves that they've still got it. They're more experienced now and know their instruments better, but they can still bring the grit that made everyone fall in love with them in the beginning. Probably enough to make me go on and buy the album, which is the point, right?

No, this album isn't as ruckus-ey as their prior stuff, but it's still fantastic. There's an incredible maturity of musicanship here, and it's still clearly their own unique style. Bands should not stagnate in their development, and it's great to see these guys take the next step forward. It's my favorite album of theirs so far.
