Starting a Successful Music Label in Nigeria – The Audu Maikori Story

Audu Maikori, the founder of Chocolate City Music, had dreams of being a rapper, but destiny had a different path for him.

Born in 1973, Maikori now oversees various entities within the Chocolate City Group, such as a record label and an advertising agency, established in 2005 with his brother Yahaya Maikori and business expert Paul Okeugo, during the early stages of the Afrobeats era. This was a time when the music industry faced challenges due to piracy and low profits.

Maikori aimed to revolutionize the music industry by making it both exciting and profitable. Chocolate City nurtured artists like M.I, Ice Prince, Brymo, Jesse Jagz, and Bez, who played significant roles in the evolution of Afrobeats. The label has adapted to the industry’s changing landscape over the years.

Currently, the label is home to successful artists like Young Jonn, Blaqbonez, and CKay, whose hit single “Love Nwantiti” was produced during his time with Chocolate City.

Maikori, who now serves on the board of Chocolate City Group and dedicates his time to various passion projects, shares his experience of leading one of Africa’s largest record labels and entertainment companies with TunesDeck.

Audu Maikori: Reflecting on my journey, I often mention that failed attempts at rapping led me to discover my passion for music. Raised in a musical family, I aspired to create a platform where talented individuals could achieve their aspirations.

In 2005, there was a misconception that entertainment professionals lacked education or job opportunities. Realizing the potential of the music industry, especially through legal aspects, inspired me. We aimed to redefine the image of record labels, emphasizing professionalism and success.

Our success was built on diversification. Beyond music, we ventured into various revenue streams, enabling us to withstand challenges like piracy and fluctuating royalties. Structurally, Chocolate City emphasized shared leadership to maintain a consistent vision.

Looking ahead, the focus is on entering the film industry, a sector with substantial employment potential. Witnessing artists like CKay achieve success validates our efforts. Aspiring talents see Chocolate City as a role model for professional music practice.

Our legacy lies in demonstrating that dreams can materialize and setting industry standards. I believe in seizing opportunities to make a positive impact aligning with our vision and values.
