Last week, numerous young men from Nigeria engaged in discussions in the comments of American influencer Luis Olivas. He shares content similar to Andrew Tate’s, which positions men as ‘alpha’ and encourages them to act selfishly in relationships. His follower count surged from a few hundred thousand to over a million in just days, as he urged men to treat women poorly. This sparked outrage due to his blatant promotion of sexist views.
In his posts, he made statements such as “Giving her a second chance is like watching the same film twice; the ending never changes,” and “A man will set aside his happiness for a woman, but a woman will prioritize her own happiness over her man.” These quotes were often accompanied by the phrase “Bro to Bro.” Despite being active on TikTok for a while, it was only recently that many Nigerians became aware of him.
In response to this, women have started to quote-tweet a message by Omotara Lawrence, who encouraged women to embrace their own importance with the phrase “Girl to Girl.”
