Tanukichan’s Latest Music Release on TunesDeck
Hannah van Loon, known as Tanukichan, a beloved shoegaze-pop artist from Oakland, is gearing up to release a new EP titled Circles in September. The EP kicks off with the track “City Bus,” which serves as the lead single.
Unlike her previous works, Circles is not produced by Toro y Moi’s Chaz Bear. Instead, van Loon collaborated with Franco Reid, who reached out to her after spotting her in an Incubus T-shirt on Instagram. Their partnership flourished, leading to a five-song EP that delves into a darker aspect of Tanukichan’s signature dreamy, fuzzy sound. Noteworthy is the inclusion of TikTok shoegaze sensation Wisp on the EP.
In relation to “City Bus,” van Loon shared:
This song reflects a fragmented, stream of consciousness narrative, drawn from memories and the present. It delves into concepts of identity and my role in society. When I listened to Franco’s initial demo and started adding lyrics, it transported me back to my childhood in San Francisco, where I used to travel around the city on buses. The constant swaying and balancing, observing the city’s diverse people, sounds, and scents, left a lasting impression on me.
