Spiritualized’s J Spaceman & John Coxon Collaborate on Score for William Eggleston’s Stranded In Canton
Documenting the essence of Memphis in 1974, Stranded In Canton by William Eggleston captures a raw and vibrant portrayal of life during that time. The film features notable locals such as Alex Chilton, Furry Lewis, and even Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. Described in an old Dangerous Minds retrospective as akin to Trash Humpers by Harmony Korine, the documentary offers a candid and spontaneous look into the lives of various individuals in black and white footage. Renowned filmmaker Gus Van Sant contributed an essay to its 2008 reissue.
In 2015, Spiritualized’s J Spaceman and John Coxon composed a new score for the film and performed it live at the Barbican in London. The recorded performance from nine years ago is now set for release. Spaceman and Coxon will recreate the score at upcoming screenings in London, New York, Memphis, and Los Angeles later this year, promising unique experiences for fans.
Reflecting on his connection to Memphis, Spaceman shared:
“Memphis is infused with this magic, then this dreadful poverty as well. There’s a strangeness to it. It’s a place where I never felt comfortable… So, the Eggleston film is a spying hole into that world. Jim Dickinson even plays in the movie, Furry Lewis plays in the movie too, but there’s also an unhinged craziness. It feels dangerous.”
