Self Esteem & Moonchild Sanelly – “Big Man”

Self Esteem, also known as Rebecca Lucy Taylor, gained recognition with her 2021 album Prioritise Pleasure, a Mercury Prize nominee. Following a series of achievements including a US TV debut on Corden and receiving an honorary doctorate, she teams up with Moonchild Sanelly to release “Big Man.” This track marks her first original material since Prioritise Pleasure, with a recent feature on Becky Hill’s “True Colours.”

Explaining the inspiration behind “Big Man,” Taylor describes it as a tribute to supportive and secure partners who appreciate their significant others without needing acknowledgment for simple acts of kindness. Moonchild Sanelly also reflects on the challenges of being bold female artists in relationships and the importance of having a partner who uplifts rather than diminishes success.

The song was borne out of a dialogue between the artists on the essence of a truly supportive partner, someone who values and champions their spouse’s achievements without feeling threatened. Collaborating with Johan Karlberg facilitated the creation of this empowering track, with a video concept envisioned as a reverse of “I Want To Break Free.”

Moonchild Sanelly shares her perspective on the collaborative process:

Through candid conversations in the studio, we delved into the challenges faced by ambitious women in relationships and the significance of having a partner who embraces and encourages our individuality. Together, Rebecca and I explored the concept of an ideal partner who celebrates our success and provides unwavering support. The song portrays a vision of a secure and emotionally intelligent man – a true ‘big man’.”
