Trace Mountains, a project by Dave Benton from LVL UP, has released a new cover of Matthew Sweet’s “Sick Of Myself.”
Originally featured on Sweet’s 1995 album 100% Fun, the cover by Trace Mountains takes a different approach, slowing down the pace and incorporating a soothing piano instrumental. The emotional lyrics such as “In a world that’s ugly and a lie / It’s hard to even want to try” resonate in this version. Benton shared his thoughts on the cover:
During 2021, I began working on this recording in Hudson, NY with co-producer Jared Samuel. Although the initial session was never completed, the piano-driven, mellow arrangement influenced the direction we took to showcase the song’s vulnerable and minimalist side. I felt a deep connection with Matthew Sweet’s raw lyrics about loneliness amidst all the impressive guitar solos in his original recording, so our aim was to emphasize that emotional aspect in our rendition. I am proud of what we created and I hope you enjoy it.
Benton has also been gearing up for the LVL UP reunion shows. Take a listen to his rendition of “Sick Of Myself” below.
