Next month, section1 will unveil piano1, an exclusive collection of solo-piano pieces. Featured artists such as Youth Lagoon, Hand Habits, Kelly Moran, and Brad Oberhofer usually delve into more intricate compositions, but this compilation aims to invite a moment of tranquility for both creators and listeners. You can experience this vibe in the new tracks from ML Buch, Laraaji, and Alice Boman.
ML Buch, hailing from Denmark and known for her impactful album Suntub, presents the intriguingly atmospheric piece titled “Getting To Know Each Other.” Here’s her perspective:
This composition is a musical conversation featuring various piano sounds. It captures the euphoria and awkwardness of meeting someone new. It starts with a simple tune on a grand piano, answered by a melody that is intentionally off-key. I enjoyed experimenting with a freshly tuned grand piano alongside five vintage uprights, each in disrepair. The piece evolves into a repetitive section where another piano joins in, learning the riff, complemented by EBowed strings. In retrospect, I approached the piano more like a guitar, playing with its pristine sound.
Laraaji, a pioneer of ambient music and once a collaborator with Brian Eno in the early ’80s, contributes a rich piece called “Waltz Life,” accompanied by a video of mud wrestling. Laraaji shares:
The piano has been my primary instrument for joyful expression since I was a child. My mother nurtured my interest by providing piano lessons early on. Through the piano, I explore various imaginative realms, filled with vibrant and mysterious soundscapes.
Danish artist Alice Boman presents her introspective piece “17.” Here’s her reflection:
Having played the piano since childhood, I transitioned from following sheet music to a more free and playful style. This evolution profoundly changed my relationship with the piano. While creating this track, I returned to that playful spirit, letting my fingers guide the music.
