The band Ekko Astral from DC made a strong impression with their debut single pink balloons earlier this year in April, which earned them recognition as a Band To Watch. They released another track called “Holocaust Remembrance Day” in June, though by September, two members had left the group. Despite these challenges, they continue to push forward with their latest powerful song, “Pomegranate Tree.”
Reflecting on the song, drummer Miri Tyler expressed deep feelings, stating, “It’s exhausting to see your childhood community’s symbol become associated with genocide and witnessing once-respected individuals justify the actions of a far-right government.”
She shared, “Jael and I were raised as Jewish Americans, taught about our ‘homeland’ but not about the people living there before us. We learned to celebrate victories, believing we were hated and that violent actions were justified. Yet, no act of genocide can ever be deemed righteous. Experts, including Holocaust survivors, recognize the genocide happening now. It’s distressing to see these acts conducted in the name of our faith and culture—it keeps us awake at night.”
“Pomegranate Tree” pays homage to the influential band Fugazi, featuring a dynamic and intense bass line. Spanning over six minutes, the track offers an emotional journey, culminating in a chaotic crescendo. You can listen to it below.
