The Cure has made a comeback! After much speculation, they’re releasing new music that truly feels like their classic sound. This iconic band has stayed active by touring and performing new songs live over the last 15 years. Excitingly, they will soon share some of these live tracks on vinyl. They’ve also used creative methods like postcards and billboards to promote their upcoming album, Songs Of A Lost World, alongside the reveal of their new single “Alone.” Today marks the official launch of both the album announcement and the single, and it’s fantastic!
The new track “Alone” embodies everything fans love about The Cure. It’s a rich, seven-minute exploration of grief, featuring drums that strike with a soft weight and keyboards that evoke nostalgia. Robert Smith, unmistakably himself, sings poignant lyrics about dreams and the end of the world. It’s genuinely a beautiful piece of art. About the song, Smith shared:
“It’s the track that unlocked the record; as soon as we had that piece of music recorded, I knew it was the opening song, and I felt the whole album come into focus. I had been struggling to find the right opening line for the right opening song for a while, working with the simple idea of ‘being alone,’ always in the back of my mind this nagging feeling that I already knew what the opening line should be… as soon as we finished recording I remembered the poem ‘Dregs’ by the English poet Ernest Dowson… and that was the moment when I knew the song — and the album — were real.”
Songs Of A Lost World will be their first new album since 2008 and is set to release in just over a month. While details about the record are still under wraps, you can listen to “Alone” below.
