Before joining Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham created an album titled Buckingham Nicks. Now, indie-folk artists Andrew Bird and Madison Cunningham are set to release their interpretation of this album next month. Their cover art, however, does not replicate the original’s iconic style featuring minimal clothing and flowing hair.
The new project, titled Cunningham Bird, is produced by Mike Viola, who contributes various instruments alongside Bird and Cunningham. The overall tracklist remains intact, but the songs are reimagined as indie chamber pieces. They have already released two singles from the album, “Crying In The Night” and “Crystal.”
Bird expressed his thoughts on the original album:
Listening to Buckingham Nicks’ debut, one can’t help but envision it as a precursor to Fleetwood Mac’s legacy. It’s interesting, considering the album is no longer in print and difficult to find on streaming services. Yet, its youthful ambition and flair are captivating. I believe the essence of covering someone lies in the desire to perhaps offer a new interpretation. This album is full of confidence and indulgence, and we wanted to embody that spirit. Madison is incredibly talented, always exploring new sounds. I was eager to collaborate with her on this project.
Cunningham added her perspective:
Working with Andrew has always inspired me to collaborate outside of our individual projects. He’s one of my favorite artists and a profound musical partner. This lesser-known album by Nicks and Buckingham came to us at a time we were exploring our creative paths together. Discovering this album was exciting, so we decided to reinterpret it from start to finish. Not only was it one of the most fulfilling creative experiences, but it also resonated with me personally during the creation process. I hope we’ve honored its essence.
