We’re excited about Greg Mendez! This talented singer-songwriter has spent significant time honing his craft in Philadelphia’s DIY music scene. Now, with the release of his 2023 self-titled album, he has gained wider recognition. He recently announced his partnership with the indie label Dead Oceans, which will release his upcoming EP First Time / Alone next month. The lead single, “First Time,” is available now.
After releasing his album last year, Mendez faced a challenging situation when he had to have major surgery on his right wrist. This was particularly tough for a guitarist like him. (In addition, he composed his self-titled album while recovering from a concussion. What a tough time!) The A-side of First Time / Alone features Mendez playing an electric organ with one hand, while the B-side showcases songs he penned after regaining his ability to play guitar.
The track “First Time” belongs to the first category, characterized by its soft chords that accompany Mendez’s introspective thoughts on his flaws in a relationship: “I would’ve lost in any fight/ I know it’s not the first time that you’ve been right.” Below, you can check out the music video directed by Rena Johnson and Gustav Hein, along with the complete tracklist of the EP.
