Did you hear about the “Urban Rat Summit” that Mayor Eric Adams is hosting in New York this week? I only found out today myself. Suzanne Vega also knows a thing or two about the city’s rats, as she recently revealed her new single “Rats,” marking her return to music after eight years. Interestingly, her inspiration for this song comes from both the city’s famous rodents and the Irish punk band Fontaines D.C.
Vega shared, “I was having a conversation with Jimmy Hogarth, who produced my 2007 album Beauty And Crime, about who had spotted the largest rat. That conversation got me interested, and I started to pay attention to various rat tales, all of which were true. I decided to turn those stories into a song, taking cues from the Ramones and Fontaines D.C.”
The release includes an animated music video by Martha Colburn, featuring a plethora of rats, so there’s no need for musophobics to panic. Check it out below.
