Have you checked out Alligator Bites Never Heal? It’s Doechii’s latest mixtape, and it’s one of my top picks this year. With her lively single “Alter Ego,” I was convinced that this rising star from Florida had the golden touch. However, everything changed when she teamed up with Katy Perry in 2024.
Perry’s launch for her new album 143 has not gone well. The main track “Woman’s World” attempted to embrace feminism from the Obama era but ended up feeling outdated due to Dr. Luke’s production, and its music video was so awkward that Perry later claimed it was meant to be a satire. Unfortunately, “Woman’s World” quickly lost traction on the charts, and the following single “Lifetimes,” which also fell flat commercially, led to an environmental violation investigation. Could her next attempt turn it around?
Despite these setbacks, Perry had a moment to shine when MTV awarded her the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at this week’s Video Music Awards. It was an opportunity to perform a medley of her hits, but this too didn’t go as planned; her performance felt lackluster, emphasizing how long it’s been since she had a major hit. Amid her nostalgic set, she introduced Doechii for the debut of “I’m His He’s Mine,” a new track that samples Crystal Waters’ classic “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless).” The song has now been officially released.
Similar to “Lifetimes,” “I’m His He’s Mine” is decent pop, yet it’s hard to fully appreciate it due to Perry’s overwhelming effort that detracts from any coolness it might have, even though it features catchy hooks over a captivating minimalist beat. She comes off as someone who still uses words like “amazeballs,” making the whole project feel slightly off. Even with Doechii’s contributions, the track struggles to shine.
Your thoughts might differ; perhaps you’ll find the song strong enough to elevate its energy. Check out the Torso-directed video for “I’m His He’s Mine” below and see for yourself.
The album 143 is set to release on 9/20 via Capitol Records.
