Prepare to be touched by the sublime: Joan Shelley is set to release a new EP titled Mood Ring in October, featuring a stunning title track that embodies her signature beauty. Shelley continues to impress with her artistry.
Regarding the song, she shared:
“Mood Ring” stems from the notion of time and heat being intertwined, influencing each other. Inspired by block universe theory, I pondered how change is possible if this concept holds true. The song emerged, expressing that our relationships and interactions are what drive us forward through time, even as we are ultimately shaped by it. It’s incredible to think we can illuminate this vast, unfathomable universe with our existence and that we even have the privilege to experience life.
The EP reflects significant moments in Shelley’s life, including the arrival of her daughter and her recent relocation from her rural Kentucky home. She completed the recording of Mood Ring at Louisville’s End Of An Ear studio, eagerly listening to the mixes during her journey home. This experience inspired her poignant reflection:
While driving with my daughter, she repeatedly requested “I Look After You.” She asked if it was for her, to which I affirmed, though I was aware I had written it before her birth for lovers and grieving mothers. Watching her in the mirror as she sang along was a profound moment. When we lost signal at the end of the trip, I replayed the songs on my phone, with the windows down, soaking in the line “just seven steps… all you need to know for your journey.” I wished it could truly be that simple.
“Relationships fade away / That’s the passage of time,” sings Shelley, accompanied by Julia Purcell’s harmonium drone that enhances the track’s depth. And Nathan Salsburg’s electric guitar at the end is simply breathtaking. Make sure to listen to this one.
