Nina Ryser, a DIY musician from Philadelphia, formerly part of Palberta and currently involved with @, is set to release her new solo album Water Giants next month. Her first single from the album was the discordant experimental pop track “Things I Claim.” Now, she releases another experimental and discordant pop piece titled “Underestimate.” This new song is a cacophony of hammering bass and shrieking strings. Directed by her former Palberta bandmate Ani Ivry-Block, the video for the track aims to capture the song’s repetitiveness and urgency.
Ryser described her vision for the video, which included fast, frantic movement in a frumpy suit to emphasize the cyclical and chaotic nature of the vocals. Set in the financial district at Ani Ivry-Block’s suggestion, the video reflects a maze of daunting buildings and narrow streets, creating an aggressive, claustrophobic atmosphere. The video aims to convey a sense of eerie uncanniness with wet hair, goth makeup, and running with an unclear purpose, symbolizing a cyclical nightmare. The video concludes with a string trio outro, bringing a sense of relief from the chaotic journey.
