Seven years back, the Paul Institute was launched by Jai Paul and A.K. Paul with singles from Fabiana Palladino and Ruthven. Ruthven, aka Sean Nelson, a London singer and producer also working as a firefighter, is now set to release his debut album after releasing his single “Evil” with Paul Institute and collaborations with Overmono on “Gem Lingo (ovr now).” Ruthven announced his upcoming LP Rough & Ready to arrive in fall. The album will feature Ruthven’s previously released tracks like “123 Days” and “Don’t Keep It To Yourself,” along with the new track “I Can’t Go There.”
The album carries a theme of playfulness with influences from jazz, Prince, and yacht rock artists like Michael McDonald and Steely Dan. Ruthven was inspired by their songwriting and musicianship and strived for timelessness in his music. Working with Anup (A.K. Paul) and losing early material influenced the album’s evolution, focusing on fun creative energy throughout. “I Can’t Go There” encapsulates a love story and fun energy with a hint of a colder message in the lyrics reflected in the video directed by Ruthven and Francesca Nelson.
