Fantasy of a broken heart gives a sneak peek into their upcoming debut album, Feats Of Engineering, by dropping singles like “AFV,” “Ur Heart Stops,” and “Loss.” Today, the experimental duo from New York surprises fans with the release of the intriguing track “Follow Your Captain,” a song not featured on the album.
Speaking about the song, Bailey Wollowitz shared, “‘Follow Your Captain’ was swiftly recorded in just 12 hours in Al’s bedroom earlier this summer, and mixed the following day.”
The core concept of this song has been around for as long as the other tracks on the album, but we never got around to completing it until after finishing the album. I always had this urge to include a last-minute bonus track, somewhat in awe of how mainstream artists can tweak their mixes right before an album release. Or in the style of ‘it’s the same and there’s three more’.
However, we stumbled upon this particular song, which despite having a pop essence, felt too intimate and dark to be shared. ‘Follow Your Captain’ delves into our shared youthful experiences, our adventures in the woods and underground tunnels, and the vulnerability of letting oneself be controlled by another person. The sound design draws inspiration from Smash Bros. This track marks our fastest recording completion, and the tension of this process is reflected in the music.
“Follow Your Captain” stands out with its mesmerizing and unpredictable sound, aligning with the quality of the album singles. It reaffirms why fantasy of a broken heart was recognized as a Band To Watch earlier this year. Listen to “Follow Your Captain” below.
The album Feats Of Engineering is set to release on 9/27 via Dots Per Inch.
