Gillian Welch & David Rawlings – Song Review: “Hashtag”

Gillian Welch & David Rawlings – “Hashtag”

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings recently unveiled their upcoming album Woodland, dedicated to their studio they rebuilt post the Nashville tornado. They gave a sneak peek with the track “Empty Trainload Of Sky,” and today we delve into another prelude, “Hashtag,” a departure from their usual style.

The song, led by Rawlings, pays tribute to the late Guy Clark, a significant influence on the duo. Welch mentioned, “We wrote Hashtag for Guy Clark. He taught us the ropes of being on the road, taking us on tours across various states, introducing us to the troubadour way of life.”

“Hashtag” is a poignant ballad showcasing Rawlings’ vocals and acoustic melodies, enhanced by pedal steel tones and a sublime string arrangement. The duo inquires, “When will we become ourselves?” in a harmonious plea. Experience the track below.

Woodland will be released on 8/23 on Acony.
