Deerlady’s Mali Obomsawin and Jake Blount have collaborated on a new album called Symbiont, with the lead single “My Way’s Cloudy” featuring Joe Rainey. The song was inspired by the impact of Canadian wildfires and the pervasive effects of climate change on communities.
The track incorporates a spiritual element, drawing from “My Way’s Cloudy,” a song collected from formerly enslaved Black individuals at the Hampton Institute. The music video for this single features Selena Neptune-Bear and her nieces from the Penobscot Nation.
Symbiont is described as a remix album that weaves together various musical traditions, teachings, and modern sensibilities. It aims to create a synergy between different cultural perspectives while acknowledging and addressing points of conflict through a process of remix and reconciliation.
