A single that emerged from the collaboration of members of AR Kane and Colourbox back in 1987 named MARRS achieved immense success with “Pump Up The Volume,” an all-samples track that became a global hit influencing house music and hip-hop. Caribou has taken inspiration from this iconic single to create their new track “Volume.”
From releasing recent dance-focused singles like “Honey” and “Broke My Heart,” Caribou’s Dan Snaith introduces “Volume,” a reinterpretation heavily laden with samples from “Pump Up The Volume.” This homage to the original also showcases Snaith’s unique take on house music. Snaith expressed his connection to the original track, stating:
“Pump Up The Volume” was the first time in my life I heard electronic music — sitting in front of the family stereo system listening to the top-40 countdown on the radio when I was a kid. it completely blew my mind — it sounded like something from another world. It’s stuck with me ever since — I always wanted to rework it in some way. I didn’t consciously think about it when I started working on my track, but I think there’s something really special about having gone right back to the very beginning in making this.
The music video for “Volume,” directed by Richard Kenworthy of Shynola, pays tribute to the original “Pump Up The Volume” with a similar barrage of stock footage. Both videos are available below for comparison.
The track “Volume” is now released on Merge and is ready for listeners to enjoy.
