TikTok’s Inaugural Visionary Voices Africa List:Celebrating African Trailblazers

TikTok has announced the launch of its first Visionary Voices Africa List, recognizing 15 young Africans who are making a noteworthy cultural impact. This prestigious list spotlights emerging African influencers and rising stars who are reshaping various sectors across the continent. It specifically acknowledges individuals who are creatively redefining African culture and leveraging TikTok to inform, entertain, and advocate for the African community.

The honorees are classified into Creators, Small Business Owners, and Industry Disruptors. Among the prominent figures are Grammy-winning musician Burna Boy, U.S.-based Kenyan comedian and content creator Elsa Majimbo, celebrated chef with a Guinness World Record Hilda Baci, and amapiano sensation, DJ, and producer Uncle Waffles.

The list encompasses Nigerian creator and filmmaker Blaqboi alongside Bolo Bespoke, who showcases his unique designs and the authentic style of his fashion brand, Bespoke City, on TikTok. Also featured are South African businesswoman and CEO of Afrocurl, Kayla Kim Kay, and Mwangi Muthoni of Dreadlocks Nairobi, who has transformed his salon in Nairobi into a prominent center for natural dreadlocks with his distinct fashion sense and dedication to unique styles.

The roster also includes The Joy, a standout at Coachella known for their debut EP Amabutho. Travel enthusiast Popi Sibiya and Iremide, recipient of TikTok’s 2023 Top Creator Award in the Lifestyle and Education category, are among the distinguished individuals. Furthermore, sports content creator with over 1.5 million followers, Arap Uria, Alexa Schempers, founder of Cape Town-based fashion brand Rethread, and Chad Jones, recognized for his family dance videos, are on the list. Completing the list of honorees is Banele Ndaba, also known as Moghelingz, whose nostalgic TikTok content offers entertainment and educational insights on African culture.

Alongside the inaugural list, TikTok is launching the #VisionaryVoicesAfrica programming hub within the app. This hub will showcase a specially curated music playlist highlighting the diverse sounds that are establishing Africa’s presence on the global stage. Throughout July and August, TikTok will feature these influential African musicians, recognizing their artistic contributions and cultural impact.
