Uniform recently announced their upcoming album, American Standard, and shared the lead single “This Is Not A Prayer.” They have now revealed another intense track called “Permanent Embrace,” accompanied by a video directed by Sean Stout.
Lead vocalist Michael Berdan shared his thoughts on “Permanent Embrace” and its connection to his personal struggle with bulimia nervosa…
The song delves into an aspect of the disease that I have always been hesitant to confront. With a narrative crafted by author Maggie Siebert, the lyrics explore the notion of one person holding another emotionally captive. Drawing parallels between a tragic car crash and a deteriorating relationship, the narrator reveals the emotional manipulation and guilt that keep their partner trapped in a destructive cycle. The music mirrors the intensity of the lyrics with abrasive riffs and haunting synth melodies, inspired by the unsettling brilliance of Faith No More’s ‘Angel Dust.’
Stout commented on the video:
Upon reading Mike’s poignant lyrics, we were deeply moved. We aimed to visually capture the raw emotion and introspection by juxtaposing decaying outer landscapes with an alternate reality undergoing a similar decay. This concept illustrates a parallel existence, separate yet intertwined, hinting at a shared world in the throes of transformation.
