Review of Cal In Red’s Latest Song “Kitchen” Featuring James Mercer

Cal In Red – “Kitchen” (Feat. James Mercer)

Connor and Kendall Wright, known as Cal In Red, are preparing for the release of their first album, Low Low, on August 30 through B3SCI Records. They have already shared singles like “She Won’t Say,” “Boyfriend,” “Zebra,” and “Habits,” and now they bring us a captivating new track featuring James Mercer from the Shins, titled “Kitchen.”

James Mercer has a long history with the Wright brothers. Back in 2017, their previous band Mertle won the Shins’ Van Contest with a rendition of “Painting A Hole.” Kendall elaborates on this collaboration, describing “Kitchen” as a departure from their usual sound, leaning more towards a country vibe. The song reflects on a breakup seen from an outsider’s perspective, inspired by the disintegration of a relationship between two friends. Kendall shares, “We like to call ‘Kitchen’ our ‘country song,’ kind of. Sonically, it’s a pivot from everything that the band has been up to this point. It’s a breakup song at its core, but one where you’re witnessing it from outside ruins. Having lived with two friends in love and then watching it crumble, the song came easy.”

He continues to express his admiration for the Shins’ song “Gone for Good” and the emotional depth it carries within its country tones. Having always appreciated James Mercer’s ability to infuse songs with personal yet relatable sentiments, they took a chance and asked Mercer to lend his vocals on “Kitchen,” to which he graciously agreed. Mercer himself shared positive feedback on the collaboration, stating, “I’ve loved watching Cal In Red develop the past few years and after hearing ‘Kitchen,’ and the record, I was happy to get to collab!”

Take a listen to “Kitchen” below and look out for Low Low releasing on 8/30 via B3SCI Records.
