Dale Crover, the drummer of Melvins, and Kim Thayil, the guitarist of Soundgarden, are music veterans from the early days of the Seattle grunge scene. Both were featured on the seminal 1986 compilation Deep Six, which marked a significant moment for grunge music. Thayil recently discussed Deep Six on the Bandsplain podcast. Now, these two iconic musicians have collaborated on a new track.
In anticipation of his upcoming solo album Glossolalia, Crover has enlisted the talents of artists such as Tom Waits, Ty Segall, and Rob Crow from Pinback. Kim Thayil contributes to two songs on the album. Previously, Crover released the single “Doug Yuletide” and now presents “I Quit,” featuring Thayil. The track is a unique, slightly off-kilter pop piece with an impressive Thayil guitar solo. Crover describes the song:
It’s a reflection on the attempt to exert control over others and the belief of always being right. The song is played in a tuning I refer to as “Lazy Keith Richards.” Starting in G, it features tuning the A string to G. I felt it would be fantastic to have Kim provide a guitar solo for the piece. His solo comes in after the second chorus.

Glossolalia is set to be released on 9/13 via Joyful Noise.
